CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Governor Patrick Morrisey issued the following statement on the passing of Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr.:
“West Virginia lost a remarkable public servant with the passing of Judge John Copenhaver. A Charleston native, World War II veteran, and longtime federal judge, he dedicated his life to the service of our state and nation.
“Appointed to the federal bench by President Gerald Ford in 1976, Judge Copenhaver served the people of West Virginia with distinction for nearly five decades and remained active on the bench well into his 90s. He earned widespread respect throughout the legal community for his intellect, professionalism, and deep commitment to the rule of law.
“His impact on West Virginia’s judicial system and legal community will be felt for generations to come.
“Denise and I are praying for Judge Copenhaver’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all those mourning his passing.”
