A 53-year vision realized: Gov. Justice holds grand opening ceremony for final section of U.S. Route 35
On Thursday, Gov. Jim Justice held a grand opening ceremony for the largest single-contract project in his visionary Roads to Prosperity program, cutting the ribbon on the final 14.6-mile section of four-lane U.S. Route 35.
Completion of the project will now allow travelers to utilize a safe highway to accommodate increased traffic demands in the area. Motorists will be able to drive on smooth, four-lane pavement for 37 consecutive miles, beginning at the Interstate 64 exit at Scott Depot and continuing straight through to Point Pleasant and the Ohio state line, heading toward Columbus.

Gov. Justice and medical experts urge boosters to maximize protection for those initially vaccinated months ago
On Friday, Gov. Justice once again pleaded for more West Virginians who have already received their initial series of COVID-19 vaccine doses to seek out a booster shot as soon as possible.

“We have had 1,072,338 West Virginians get their first shot. But we only have 48,893 that have received their booster shot,” Gov. Justice continued. “We’re sitting at less than 5% of vaccinated people that have gotten their booster shot. We’re making progress, but it’s just too slow.”

On Wednesday, Gov. Justice and medical experts stressed the importance of booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccine for West Virginians who were initially vaccinated several months ago. There are now booster recommendations for all three available COVID-19 vaccines in the United States.

Registration now open for “Do It for Babydog: Round 3”
Gov. Justice announced Tuesday that online registration is now open for the third round of the ​​”Do it for Babydog: Save a life, Change your life” vaccination sweepstakes. Do it for Babydog: Round 3 is focused on educating children and their parents on the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine and the importance of getting West Virginia’s youngest residents vaccinated. This round of the sweepstakes is open to all West Virginians ages 5-18 who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Children ages 5-17 must have parental consent to be vaccinated and to register.

Gov. Justice presents $50,000 checks to four of West Virginia’s highest-vaccinated middle schools through WVDE’s I Got Vaxxed Competition
Gov. Justice traveled to four of the highest-vaccinated middle schools across the state Tuesday, presenting students and staff at each school with a $50,000 check as winners in the West Virginia Department of Education’s I Got Vaxxed Competition. After the WVDE initially launched the program offering prizes of $25,000 for winning schools, Gov. Justice supplemented the competition’s funding, increasing the prize award to $50,000 to further incentivize school communities to participate.

Gov. Justice honors Veterans Day with virtual ceremony
Gov. Justice honored the service and sacrifice of Veterans in West Virginia and across the country with a virtual Veterans Day Ceremony on Thursday morning. The event featured messages from West Virginia National Guard Adjutant General Bill Crane, West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance Secretary Ted Diaz, and West Virginia Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeff Sandy. The program also included a performance from the Cabell Midland High School Marching Band and the National Anthem performed by the Winfield High School Show Choir.

CareSource presents $25,000 check for West Virginia Communities In Schools
On Friday, Gov. Justice took time out of his remarks about COVID-19, along with First Lady Cathy Justice, to welcome officials with healthcare company CareSource, who announced that they are donating $25,000 to benefit West Virginia’s Communities In Schools (CIS) program. Gov. Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice started CIS in three counties in 2018. Since then, the program has expanded to 31 counties, serving more than 70,000 students in 171 schools across the state.

Corridor H detour goes into effect Monday, Nov. 15
Corridor H (US 219, US 48) will be closed between Kerens and Elkins beginning Monday, Nov. 15, to allow for reconstruction of the Pearcy Bridge system in Randolph County. The pair of bridges carries Corridor H​ across Harpertown Road. Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be closed to all traffic during the duration of construction. The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2022.

WVDOH accepts bids for 20 projects, includes new bridge on Corridor H
A massive bridge to be built over the Cheat River near Parsons is among 20 projects included in a bid letting conducted by the West Virginia Division of Highways on Tuesday. The project will be paid for with funding from Governor Jim Justice’s Roads to Prosperity highway construction and maintenance program. WVDOH is reviewing the bids and hopes to award contracts for these projects soon.

West Virginia Department of Tourism releases final fall foliage report and featured country road trip of 2021

Some parts of the state continue to show good color as the West Virginia Department of Tourism releases its final fall foliage report to help travelers enjoy peak leaf season. This report marks the sixth and final in a series of weekly updates, prepared in partnership with the West Virginia Division of Forestry, to help travelers plan autumn road trips and adventures based on peak foliage across the state. Color is past its peak throughout much of the state, but some color, especially in the oaks, still remains in most regions.
