CHARLESTON, WV – First Lady Cathy Justice addressed a packed house inside the Governor’s Reception Room at the State Capitol Friday, as one of the keynote speakers at an event celebrating Women’s History Month in West Virginia.
During her address, the First Lady encouraged young women in West Virginia to follow their dreams.
“Shoot for the moon,” First Lady Justice said. “You can do anything you want to do.”
“When I was growing up, [women] were teachers,” Justice continued. “Now that’s all changed. I have a daughter who’s a doctor. We always encouraged her to go beyond.”
During her speech, the First Lady took time to celebrate the impact of her own mother as a significant role model in her life.
“I was an only child, but I had a wonderful mother who probably, at that time, I didn’t realize what an inspiration she was on my life,” Justice said. “But, as I get older, so many of the things that she told me and taught me have just come to fruition.”
The First Lady also presented a proclamation, signed by the Governor, officially designating March 2019 as Women’s History Month in West Virginia.
In the proclamation, the Governor championed West Virginian women as “leaders, not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements, especially the peace movement, which create a more fair and just society for all.”
