Gov. Justice says “beefed up” efforts to control traffic and safety on I-64 being implemented by DOT, State Police

CHARLESTON, WV – Gov. Jim Justice said today that the West Virginia Department of Transportation and West Virginia State Police continue to implement a plan to “beef up” traffic control and safety efforts along a construction zone on I-64 between mile markers 44 and 24 in Kanawha, Putnam and Cabell counties.
“DOT Secretary Tom Smith and State Police Col. Jan Cahill have reported back to me and with the additional steps that have been taken we are seeing that a combination of enhanced law enforcement presence and visibility, along with more signage, traffic control barrels and cones, along that corridor, are making a dramatic difference.
“The speed limit has been dropped to 55 miles per hour throughout the entire 20 miles of the project zone and temporary rumble strips are also being put in place over the next few days and this, as well, will slow motorists down and help that situation,” Gov. Justice said.
Earlier this week, following a number of fatal accidents, Gov. Justice issued a directive to the DOT and State Police to “go above and beyond” the national standards for safety measures that were being followed.
“We will continue to monitor this situation 24, 7 and I will keep the public informed,” Gov. Justice added. “We are committed to making construction zones as safe as we possibly can for motorists and those working on the job.”
