Gov. Justice: Beckley Turnpike Widening Roads to Prosperity Project Awarded

8/29/2018

CHARLESTON, WV- Gov. Jim Justice announced Wednesday that the West Virginia Department of Transportation has awarded the first General Obligation bond project from his Roads to Prosperity program that will widen nearly eight miles of the West Virginia Turnpike near Beckley.

The contract was awarded to Triton Construction of St. Albans with a bid of $105,675,400.

“Earlier this year a single bid came in and it was deemed to be too high,” Gov. Justice said. “At that time I directed Transportation Secretary Tom Smith and his staff to review and rework the criteria so that we get the work done and live within our means as I said we would when we explained the Roads to Prosperity program to the citizens of West Virginia. And that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

The West Virginia Parkways Authority is administering the contract for WVDOH.

“In keeping with Governor Justice’s directive, we worked hard to make revisions and re-bid this project, saving millions of dollars in the process,” stated Secretary Tom Smith. “We remain committed to making sure we spend our public funds wisely.”
