Governor Justice Orders Halt to Sewer Line Project in Minden

CHARLESTON, WV – Gov. Jim Justice said today that construction on a sewer line running from the old Arbuckle PSD sewer plant to the Oak Hill sewer plant in Fayette County has been stopped immediately pending a final report expected later this month or in early March from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Representatives from the Justice Administration met with concerned citizens in Minden on Monday and Gov. Justice made his decision immediately following the conclusion of that meeting.
“Again, it is my priority to protect the health of all West Virginians and we are stopping this sewer line extension until we know more about the situation,” Gov. Justice said.
Monday’s decision follows an announcement last week that Gov. Justice intends to support an expected recommendation from the EPA to have an area in Minden added to the National Priorities List for designation as a Superfund clean-up site.
For more than 25 years the EPA has been in control of the former Shaffer Equipment location in Minden to address contamination and remediation.
“It’s a shame that this has been going on for decades and that it hasn’t been fixed,” Gov. Justice said. “We want it taken care of right this time and I intend to see that through.”
